Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing
Phased array ultrasonic testing (UT) is quickly becoming the inspection method of choice for the inspection of welds. The complex technology provided by using phased array UT instruments and transducers benefits the technician by providing proven technology when it comes to interpretation of the UT data.
Advances with phased array UT of welds is becoming a more reliable and economical solution for weld inspections. We have performed many phased array UT inspections of boiler tube welds. Advantages to phased array UT over radiography testing (RT) is that there is no down time needed for inspection. As soon as the weld has cooled, the weld can be inspected with phased array UT, without having to evacuate the area of production personnel. This saves valuable time and operation cost.
We were assigned to inspect the "dutchmen"repair welds in this recovery boiler with phased array UT. The client was well pleased with our performance and the cost savings over RT. We were able to inspect each weld, shortly after completion, providing instant inspection results.
